Often times the most difficult dental extraction is one that is done "simply." Teeth that are multi-rooted, have limited coronal tooth structure, or are within very dense bone are often not amenable to extraction in a simple fashion. The ability to section a tooth prior to its removal can simplify the procedure, increase predictability, and increase satisfaction of both the patient and the practitioner. Safely implementing this into your practice can turn procedures you dread into those you look forward to. This lecture is designed to give listeners insight as to the principles of surgical extractions and will specifically highlight the use of surgical drills to section teeth as a part of the surgical extraction procedure.
Learning Objectives:
Understand the variety of armamentarium available for sectioning teeth.
Understand the principles of safely sectioning teeth.
Understand the complications and difficulties that can occur when using a surgical drill to section teeth.
