As the number of dental implants being placed annually increases, implant maintenance is becoming more and more important. With having no standard of care for treatment of peri-implantitis or peri-implant mucositis, prevention of these diseases is of utmost importance. 2017 periodontal classification system now has a specific diagnosis criteria for diagnosis of peri-implant diseases that helps with prevention and treatment as well. The purpose of this lecture is to help participants gain a clear understanding of diagnosis of peri-implant health, peri-implant mucositis, and peri-implantitis according to the new classification. It also provides up-to-date information regarding peri-implant maintenance in both periodontitis and non-periodontitis patients. It delineates when and why any intervention might be necessary, once peri-implant disease is detected.
