Good judgement comes from experience, experience comes from bad judgement. I have a lot of experience. I have made a number of mistakes in my career as a dentist and as an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, have dealt with other people's complications, and am often asked to comment on complications that may end up in the medico-legal system. This presentation is designed to teach you how to know when to use the word "no." I will show you complications, explain how they happened, how they could have been avoided, and provide tools to keep you out of trouble and what to do globally if you get into trouble. I will discuss strategies to avoid having an unhappy patient, and how to avoid losing control of a complication as it is happening. I will discuss what you may need to have in your office in the case of a complication and what you can do to sort out situations that may lead to a misadventure. The best way to learn about this topic is to see examples and discuss what was done in each case.
Learning Objectives:
Develop a strategy for managing a common complication in terms of patient management, referral plan when necessary, and patient follow-up care.
Identify situations that may lead to a complication and give you tools to help avoid them.
Discuss instruments and materials to have in your office to help you in the event of a complication.
Recognize when they are having a complication.
Form a strategy to deal with the complication at the time of the complication, and afterwards with the patient.
Predict and evaluate when a complication might occur so they may be able to avoid having it in the first place.
Learn from examples presented to help avoid those complications in the future.
