In the treatment of children, a compassionate restorative appointment always begins with a proper set up for the safe and predictable delivery of local anesthesia. This course will utilize real life videos with a foundation of science to guide best practices. Myths regarding nitrous oxide and articaine will be dispelled and key points regarding the MTHFR gene brought to light. Participants will learn tips for each stage of pediatric development to set expectations, predict behavior, promote cooperation, and create positive dental experiences.
Learning Objectives:
Identify children and teens who are good candidates for the use of nitrous oxide and oxygen.
Optimally utilize topical anesthetic for true benefit without inadvertently anesthetizing beyond the areas of injection.
Note the best predictors of cooperation for children prior to starting a procedure.
Distinguish between clinical scenarios that require an inferior alveolar block versus infiltration.
Integrate supplemental items such as weighted blankets, bolsters, and even at times, medical stabilization to promote the sense of security.
Deliver local anesthesia with minimal risk of needle hub separation.
Confidently develop a parent presence or absence protocol unique to every child treated.
Develop a nitrous oxide titration protocol for different age groups and temperament at the onset of the appointment.
